Artist's Comments

This is an expression of my annoyance with people who think your sexuality is your entire identity. It's clearly more a part of some people's identity than others, just like some people are more interested in dating than others, regardless of sexuality; but nevertheless, your sexuality is never the entirety of you.

This was inspired by, quite recently, finding out that I like kissing girls, and thinking, "Well, this is going to mean some changes. ... Wait. Why should it?" I'm still the same person I was, I just happen to like girls. It doesn't mean any more drastic a change than if I'd picked up a new hobby over the summer. I know that other people in my position might feel differently, but, that's how I feel about it.
I probably spent most of the time that I worked on this messing around with the opacity and the placement of the two sets of text, trying to make them stand out without interfering with each other too much. I might make another version with the rainbow list in a more readable font, and possibly including only activities, since obviously I have more in common with other people who like acting than other people who like pizza. Still, I think the main message remains clear.

You are so true that who we are with does not define who we are. We are still the same people we were the day before and will continue to be unless we allow outside influnces into our lives to make us change. Rock on and continue to be who you are everything else is just chocolate.

While you may be right about a change in sexual prefetance doesn't initially change who you are and what you like, comparing it to a hobby over the summer is incredibly naive, and people who come out of "the closet" run serious physical and mental risks. It does change who you are in society's eyes, and no matter how much people deny their interest in other people's feelings towards them, it still matters if only a little bit. Many GLBT youth commit suicide I'm lucky enough to be born into a part of the country that is wildly accepting and a city that initiated the Gay Rights movement as we know it. If I were born in somewhere like Alabama I'd be dead now for acting like I do.

Patronizing sexuality is no better than blowing it out of proportion.

But it's only my opinion.

I agree with what you say - I guess what part of I am trying to say is that other people should regard it the same way as I mentioned, and that no one should be at physical or mental risk because of it. I know that it is a far different situation now from just acquiring a hobby, but in a better world, it wouldn't change who you are in society's eyes.

Very well presented. I like how the most common thing that people would point out in this ( "kissing other girls" ) doesn't look any different than any of the other text. It shouldn't. Because that is a part of who you were born to be. Granted, you may accquire a like more for your hobbies and interests, but your sexual preference... well, that's something you're born with. It's just been hiding with everything else.

If that makes any sense what-so-ever, then I'm glad.

If gay men could refocus their hyperactive boy-craziness, they would rule the world -- benevolently and tastefully, of course...
